A small, family-owned producer with just 35 hectares of vineyards, Bouza nonetheless sits at the summit of Uruguay’s fast-evolving wine scene, largely on account of its single-vineyard Tannat from its base in the relatively cool climate of Montevideo. The recently developed Pan de Azucar vineyards lie in the even cooler far-east of the country towards the South Atlantic coastline, where a long growing season and plenty of sunshine counter the low temperatures to yield a small -production Riesling in the slatey, minerally image of Germanic renderings, filled out by a touch of red apple fruit.

Tasting notes

Powerful and compact nose of white fruits and peach. The palate has abundant power and high acidity balancing the sweetness of the orchard fruits. Impressively long finish. 18 points, JancisRobinson.com Coming from one of Bouza’s two thr illing new vineyards in Maldonado, this Riesling is racy and vibrant with enticing notes of lemon oil and petrol. The mouth-watering acidity underpins a richer, oily mouthfeel with beautiful length. (AB)
