2019 Chateau Le Pape, Pessac-Leognan (6 x Bottle)

France Bordeaux Pessac-Leognan

This is such a great wine to know about. Full of finessed pencil lead and liquorice, cassis and autumnal berry fruits. Elegant, with lilting acidity without sacrificing a creamy feel through the mid-palate, and really does feel like it is part of the Haut-Bailly family. Harvest September 30 to October 11.

Vinous

The 2019 Le Pape is exquisite. Floral, savory and blood orange top notes give the 2019 striking freshness to play off the natural radiance of red cherry and raspberry fruit. The balance of richness and vibrancy is compelling. Le Pape has seldom been this seductive. The 2019 is all class.

Vinous

The 2019 Le Pape is plump, juicy and expressive, all qualities that make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next decade or more. Juicy dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol and mocha are all dialed up in this juicy, racy Pessac-Léognan.

Vinous

The 2019 Le Pape was picked 30 September to 11 October. Deep ruby in colour, it has a clean and precise, almost Burgundy-like bouquet with raspberry, wild strawberry and subtle loamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly creamy-textured opening that belies that structure underneath, then it segues into a distinctly saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Excellent.

Vinous

The 2019 Le Pape has a vivid bouquet of blackberry and raspberry scents, conveying the purity of a fine Burgundy, as I noted out of barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and plenty of tarry black fruit, but less creamy than before, revealing more structure and grip on the sappy, licorice-tinged finish. Give this 5–7 years in bottle.
