2018 Nuits St. Georges, 1er Cru Clos des Porrets, Domaine Henri Gouges (6 x Bottle)

France Burgundy Cote de Nuits

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, saline and slightly peppery with a structured, quite firm yet balanced finish. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Vinous

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru was due to be racked the following week and bottled before the end of the year. It has a generous bouquet of upfront red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, a little too ripe for my liking and when compared to previous vintages. The medium-bodied palate offers soft tannins, gentle grip and plenty of fleshy red fruit, although it is missing some grip and density toward the finish. Pleasant, but I would broach this in its youth.

Vinous

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru seems to have tamed the aromatics, the red cherry and strawberry scents remaining in situ but a little more streamlined. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and slightly lactic on the entry. The oak still needs to fully be subsumed toward the finish. Quite savory in style. I am still not convinced that this is a long-term proposition.

Vinous

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a generous mulberry, incense and lavender tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is sweet and a bit “fluffy” on the entry, quite rich as expected, just missing a bit of backbone and complexity on the finish. Not a long-term bet but offers early-drinking pleasure.
