2013 Charmes-Chambertin, Tres Vielles Vignes, Grand Cru, Domaine Joseph Roty (1 x Jeroboam)

France Burgundy Cote de Nuits

Good deep red. Aromas of black cherry, minerals and smoky oak. Plush and sweet but energetic too, boasting terrific concentration to its deep, primary flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, minerals and dried flowers. With its creamy old-vines intensity and inner-mouth tension, this wine made me shiver. Big, broad, dusty tannins will hold this grand cru for many years. A very strong performance but will it eventually display the nuance for an even higher score?

Vinous

Bright medium red. Rich, sweet aromas of kirsch, espresso and menthol lifted by a violet topnote. Very sweet and gentle for this cuvée; larger-scaled than the Griottes but perhaps not as sexy today as this wine is evolving more slowly. This wonderfully plush, broad grand cru finishes with strong but well-buffered tannins and excellent grip. Am I underrating this today?
