Vieux Chateau Saint Andre
This is the family property of Jean-Claude Berrouet (who was the director and winemaker at Pétrus for 44 years), which is in Monatgne- St.-Émilion and which he runs in retirement with his son Jeff. The eleven hectares of predominantly Merlot, were purchased by Jean-Claude in 1978 as he sensed the potential of the terroir here, with clay soils over limestone on south facing slopes. For those uneasy about the direction that St.-Émilion has taken in the past 25 years, the wines here are a welcome reminder of the style that made the right bank famous – rich and vivacious without being over ripe and over oaked. The wine here way outperforms its appellation and price
