Vergelegen
Originally planted in 1700, Vergelegen thrived for 200 years. By 1962, the last of the vineyard had been removed and it was not until the estate was purchased by Anglo-American Farms in 1987 that its modern history began. After extensive soil studies, vineyards were laid out in 1989. There are currently 107 hectares under vine, spread among 8 different varieties. The winery is on four levels; three underground, to allow for gravity flow and minimal handling of fruit and wine. Andre Van Rensberg has been the winemaker here since 1998 and has largely been responsible for the iconic reputation Vergelegen has acquired.
