Langmeil, Barossa Valley
The original Langmeil winery was founded in the 1930s, but closed down in 1988. Derelict, it was purchased by three fourth-generation Barossans, Chris Bitter, Carl Lindner and Richard Lindner and started producing serious wines again in 1996. Named after the village where they are located, Langmeil own what is believed to be the oldest surviving Shiraz vineyard in the world, a block known as the Freedom Block which was planted in 1843. The winemaker here is Paul Lindner who looks for complex yet approachable wines. The SGM typifies all the qualities of Barossa wine, with great power and ripeness.
