The first generation of this family emigrated to Australia in the 1840s and purchased land in the Barossa ranges in the 1860s that is still the basis of this winery. The fifth generation Stephen and his wife Prue have put this estate at the forefront of Australian wine most notably with Hill of Grace, unquestionably Australia’s finest single vineyard shiraz, made from a 4 hectare plot of vines planted in the 1860s. Mount Edelstone comes close to hill of grace in quality and comes from a vineyard planted in 1912. The other wines from here are also of the highest quality and can improve in bottle over decades. The sixth generation is now slowly taking over with son Johann now intimately involved with the winemaking.
