Agostina Pieri
Founded in 1991 by Francesco Monaci, this 10 hectare estate is now run by Francesco along with his two sons, Jacopo, who oversees the vineyards and Francesco who looks after the winemaking. Despite the first release here being as recent as 1999 (with their 1994 Brunello), Agostina Pieri have fast gained a reputation as one of the best producers in the region. The estate is located in S.Angelo Scalo in the far south of the DOCG and covers 20 hectares. Eleven hectares are planted to vines, across five separate plots, with the rest of the land given over to olive groves. The Brunello is rich in style and sees 12 months in new barrel, followed by 12 months in older oak. Unlike many estates, the Rosso is taken very seriously here and has in the past received tre bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso. Rich and heady, it displays its warm origins.
