2022 Jean-Louis Chavy

Having lost 65% of his volume in 2021, we are delighted to be able to offer the brand new 2022 releases from Jean-Louis Chavy, one of Puligny Montrachet’s finest producers.

The Chavy family have been in Burgundy for over 200 years, with most of the vines cultivated by Jean-Louis today planted by his father and grandfather, however it wasn’t until 1986 when the Domaine began to bottle under their own name. In 2003 the original Domaine (Gerard Chavy) split, and Jean-Louis set up on his own. Today he is joined by his son Paul. His technique is simple and traditional – let the vineyards do the talking – and because they own some of the best vineyards in Puligny, that isn’t hard to do. A mere 7 hectares in total, his wines are always short in supply and high in demand, and for good reason, they’re excellent. Today we’re delighted to present three of their 1er Crus; Clavoillons, Perrières and the always iconic Folatières.

1er Cru Les Clavoillons, Jean-Louis Chavy

2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Clavoillons, Jean-Louis Chavy

Jean-Louis has a small plot of 55-year-old vines in this vineyard, which has been made famous by Domaine Leflaive. A welcome return for Clavoillons after the tiny crop in 2021 meant that Jean-Louis was forced to blend with Champ Gain. A modern take on a classic, with wonderful purity of white peach and floral notes, with a refreshingly saline finish.

1er Cru Les Perrieres, Jean-Louis Chavy

2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrieres, Jean-Louis Chavy

Les Perrières is wonderfully located in the middle of the Premier Crus on the slope, with stony, chalky soil. Tightly wound, mineral and floral, the nose is more reticent than Clavoillons at this early stage. The mineral tones follow on the palate, fleshed out by apricot and almond notes, a very classy Puligny Premier Cru that shows excellent tension.

1er Cru Les Folatieres, Jean-Louis Chavy

2022 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres, Jean-Louis Chavy

A blend of two plots, from the steepest, stoniest part of Folatières, and the from lower down the slope on richer soil. In combination, the two terroirs find the balance between acidity, structure, and richness. The nose is fresh, with melon and grapefruits; the palate is richer and more exotic, with apricots, brown butter, and spices. An excellent counterpoint to Les Perrières, more exuberant, spicy, and expressive.
