wish listAdd to Wishlist

A small, family-owned producer with just 35 hectares of vineyards, Bouza nonetheless sits alongside the larger, more lavish Garzón at the summit of Uruguay’s fast-evolving wine scene. Inspired by their Galician roots, they were the first to plant Albariño in the country. Perfectly adapted to the Atlantic climate, here the grape yields a leaner rendering than the more exotic fruit rendering of Spain’s Rias Baixas. Fast becoming Uruguay’s signature white grape, in Bouza’s hands it has a certain richness and weight, buoyed by attractive stonefruit notes, though still with classic acidity and salinity. Give it 12 months bottle age and it will develop further fatness and tropical tones.

Tasting notes

Lovely nose of peach and white flowers. The palate is mouthwatering, with lovely balance and a broad texture. Long. 17 points, JancisRobinson.com The pioneers of Albariño in Uruguay make one of the country’s most distinctive styles – the p eachiest, fleshiest and most aromatic of them all. Inviting notes of apricot are complemented by a creamy texture and fresh, tangy acidity. A lovely benchmark from Canelones/Montevideo. (AB)

Montevideo

Montevideo is the both the capital city and established heartland of quality wine production in Uruguay. It is one of the few quality wine growing regions in the world that is in such close proximity to a city, covering the 30km between Montevideo’s northern suburbs and Canelones. Although, as Château Haut-Brion demonstrate, this doesn’t have to be a problem. The climate itself is comparable to Bordeaux, albeit slightly warmer, as too is the topography of the vineyards. It is no surprise then that the grape varieties that perform best are Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, along with Syrah, Chardonnay and Tannat. Given the proximity to Montevideo city, this region is a popular destination for day-trippers visiting the vineyards and producers.
