2021 Cabernet Franc, Butussi
Friuli is not the first place you think of when it comes to Cabernet Franc, but according to our wine director Peter Mitchell, the grape is ‘by far the best red variety in North-East Italy’. It has in fact long been grown in this particular corner of the country, and is becoming increasingly popular with producers there. This earthy, sappy rendering shows why, with bright but in no way green fruit (the grapes are destemmed, with no whole bunches used) showcasing the purity of this organic, family-run estate. Two years’ ageing in large oak, plus concrete and then bottle, lends further balance and interest.
Tasting notes
A delicious, vibrant wine. Ruby red in colour tending towards purplish. Intense aroma distinctly herbaceous and vinous. Full bodied with fine tannins and rich blackcurrent fruit characters. One to chill down and enjoy now, but also has abil ity to age.
