2020 Chateau de Millery, St Emilion Grand Cru (6 x Bottle)

France Bordeaux St. Emilion

The 2020 Millery is a dense, powerful Saint-Émilion. It is also one of the richer, more potent wines I have tasted here. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, lavender and cloves infuse the 2020 with tremendous depth. In most vintages Millery is a more delicate, understated Saint-Émilion, but the 2020 is quite the powerhouse, as witnessed by its huge center of plush, concentrated fruit. I would give it a few years in bottle to shed some of its considerable baby fat. It will be fascinating to taste it in a vertical (or on its own!) somewhere down the line.

Vinous

The 2020 Millery is polished, sensual and inviting, with a lovely core of inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender and spice. In 2020, it leans to the opulent side. I don't see quite the visceral thrill and vibrancy of the best recent vintages, and yet there is plenty of charm. Not surprisingly, this late-maturing site required patience in the field to achieve full phenological ripeness. At this stage, the 2020 feels like it is on the edge of overripeness, but we will see.

Vinous

The 2020 Château de Millery, owned by Brandine de Manoncourt of Figeac, is deep purple in color. The bouquet is taciturn at first, then unfurls with black currant, briar and powdered gravel scents, veering more toward the red fruit spectrum with continued aeration. It is beautifully defined and expresses its terroir with style, almost Pomerol-like. The palate is medium-bodied with bright red berry fruit, cranberry and wild strawberry on the entry and touches of orange peel and white pepper. This Saint-Émilion has a fine backbone and a saline finish that gets the saliva flowing. Great potential, but afford it 5–7 years in the cellar.
