2019 Vieux Chateau Saint Andre, Montagne St. Emilion
Tasting note
Wonderfully rich yet refined, with dark cherry, leather, pepper and subtle oak interwoven with silky tannins. This complex wine outperforms for its price. From the winemaker at Petrus.
Our thoughts
Jean-Claude Berrouet made the wine at Pétrus – arguably the most famous estate on Bordeaux’s Right Bank – for more than 40 years. While his son Olivier has since taken over those duties, Jean-Claude continues to make wine at his family estate in Montagne St-Emilion with his other son, Jean-François. The region is a ‘satellite’ of St-Emilion, and Jean-Claude purchased the 11-hectare property back in 1978, sensing the potential of its south-facing, clay-over-limestone soils. And while the appellation doesn’t carry the same prestige as St-Emilion itself, this wine is an example of how the wines there used to be made 25 years ago, with richness and energy but without being and overworked or overoaked – and at a fraction of the price.

Inside Bordeaux
Fleshy sweet blackberry fruits with touches of brighter cranberry and sour cherry. The tannins have softened over ageing, still with plenty of limestone austerity but now showing attractive creaminess and smoked tobacco through the mid palate. Always an estate worth following, from the Berrouet family. Harvest September 30 to October 12. 80% manual harvest, 20% by machine, 20% new oak for ageing.

Vinous
The 2019 Vieux Château Saint André offers attractive cranberry, maraschino cherry and dark chocolate aromas on the nose. Heady but it is well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red fruit, hints of sour cherry mixed with strawberry and a smooth finish that needs just a tad more precision. Otherwise, this is a fine Montagne Saint-Émilion from the Berrouet family.
