2018 Puriri Hills, Estate, Auckland, New Zealand
Tasting note
Ripe an elegant nose with notes of red and black cherry, tobacco and cedar. The palate has lovely texture and very fine tannins.
Our thoughts
The name ‘Estate’ conjures up images of vast, sprawling vineyards. In reality, Puriri Hills is the smallest property whose wines we import, at just 2.5 hectares, set 30 minutes east of Auckland. All the wine is made in the style of its top cuvée, Pope, but given that is only released roughly one vintage in five, its Estate bottling offers supreme quality and, in the words of our buying director Peter Mitchell MW, is ‘how St-Emilion used to taste 30 years ago’.
