The quality of this exemplary Riserva stands as testament to the slow, painstaking progress made by Giovanni Battista d’Orsi and his wife Emilia since they purchased the estate, then in rundown state, in the early 1990s. The 10 hectares of vines have been

Deep purple coloured with brick rim. Powerful and complex nose of cherry jam, spices, hints of coffee and minerals. Full bodied and powerful, the palate has great depth of red and black fruits and a core of mineral acid. The finish shows ab undant ripe tannin and great length.

Decidedly refreshing and with great poise, helped by a minimum of 3 years ageing in their Roman chalk cellars in Chalons-en-Champagne.

Beautiful pale salmon coloured with a nose of wild strawberry and pink grapefruit. Opens out on the palate to show great power yet also finesse. One of the finest rose champagnes available.

Very ripe style of Dom Perignon with some tropical notes on the nose. Very open already, the palate starts rich and generous then closes in with a tense finish that has a sensation of dryness typical of the vintage.

Abundant peach fruit with a flinty edge. Notes of honey and toast and a lovely fresh citrussy finish.

This domaine has had an up and down history with periods of great fame and those of destitution. Built around the Clos des Lambrays, an 8.66 hectare walled vineyard that was of undoubted quality but only promoted to Grand Cru in 1981, the last 40 years has seen two changes of ownership and huge investment in the land and the buildings. Since 2014 it has been owned by LVMH, who have added small parcels in Puligny to complement the holdings in Morey-St.-Denis. Run on organic lines for many years now, certification came in 2019 with biodynamic certification to follow from 2020. Jacques Devauges runs the estate now, having trained under Thierry Brouin who was in charge for 38 years.

The domaine owns a 0.87-hectare parcel with 45-year-old vines in Clos des Chênes. Hombeline explained that their hard work in the vineyard was now apparent in the wine. Her father had long described the site as the Chambolle-Musigny of the Côte de Beaune. While Lafarge and Lafon made Clos des Chênes famous, Guyon is now competing with them by producing a highly accomplished mineral expression of the terroir. There is a significant step up in complexity here at Premier Cru lev el. Drink 2027-2039.

Deep cherry fruit, rhubarb and smoky notes combine in this medium bodied wine, with juicy acidity and fine tannins.

Beautiful nose of morello cherries, black fruits and spice. The palate is silky and supple, with a delightful roundness and freshness.

A fresher and lighter style with plenty of red fruit, some spice hints and notes of cedar. Medium bodied with gentle tannins.

Classic nose of blackcurrant, plum and cedar, with a relatively full bodied palate showing good concentration of fruit, tannins and fresh acidity.

The nose is ripe but restrained, with black cherry, damson and a touch of cedar, alongside hints of cocoa and dried herbs. There’s a pleasing lift from the limestone soils, defining the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and supple, with fin e, rounded tannins and a core of dark, fleshy fruit. Nicely judged extraction—nothing forced—supported by fresh acidity and a gentle mineral thread. The finish is clean and composed, with notes of plum, graphite and a light savoury edge—an u npretentious, well-balanced Saint-Émilion, drinking well now and over the next few years.

Bright and refined, there is a lovely balanced of lemons, gooseberries, brine and a touch of chalk. Zesty and creamy, with a bright, zippy finish.

This property was purchased by Hugh Barton, a third generation Irish immigrant, in 1821, five years before he purchased Léoville-Barton. Both remain in the same family today, with Anthony Barton having taken control in 1983. As Léoville has no actual château, Anthony lives in the 18th Century Langoa property, where both wines are made side by side by the same team. Langoa, a third growth, consists of 17 hectares planted to 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc and whilst the wines are considerably cheaper than those of their illustrious stablemate, they frequently reach similar heights.

Lush notes of sour cherry, blackberry and black currant jump from the glass, with touches of oak toast and pepper. There are also touches of cigar and sous bois. The palate is nicely resolved, with a silky texture and pleasing weight.

Owned by the Borie family since 1980 and run alongside Ducru until 2003, when the brothers divided the properties, Grand Puy Lacoste (GPL) is a fifth growth but generally perfoms way above that level and for many years was exceptional value for money. With 55 hectares of old vines, the wine from here is classic Pauillac, rich with cassis and cedar tones and super fine tannins.

The 118 hectares of vineyard are located in a single block in the south of the appellation, next to Gruaud-Larose. A firm favourite of bon-viveur, ambassador and eventual 3rd president of the USA Thomas Jefferson, Lagrange was, by the mid 19th century, the largest cru classé, with over 120 hectares under vine. After the 1920’s the estate fell into disrepair and by the 1980’s Lagrange was moribund. At this time, it was bought by Japanese company Suntory, who invested heavily in the estate, which really began to bear fruit in the 1990s. Now amongst the top wines of Bordeaux, the style is one of elegance and finesse.

The magnificent XVIIIth century Château Cissac was built on the remains of a Roman villa. Today, it is run by Marie Vialard, a direct descendant of Jacques Mondon who bought the estate in 1895, and she is producing the very best wine the es tate has seen

Deep ruby with some garnet at the rim. The nose is rich and layered, showing ripe blackberry, plum and black cherry, with notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and sweet spice. There’s a hint of graphite and dried herbs adding detail beneath t he fruit. The palate is full-bodied and plush, with generous dark fruit wrapped in velvety tannins. The oak is prominent but well-integrated, lending structure and polish. There’s good freshness for the vintage, keeping the wine balanced and giving lift to the finish.Polished and modern in style, but not overdone, this is a confident, well-crafted Saint-Émilion now entering its prime drinking window.
