About Us
Jeroboams started as a cheese and wine club run by founder Peter Rich. What started as a passion project soon ballooned into a business, with a shop opening in South Kensington in 1985, specialising in quality cheeses, oils, vinegars, and wines. We’ve come a long way since then. During this period, there have been many shops opened, some closed, new businesses acquired and sold, most notably Laytons Wine Merchants and Milroy’s of Soho. At one point there was even an affineur that supplied perfectly aged cheeses to some of London’s finest restaurants. The theme running throughout is a steadfast belief in high quality products and exceptional customer service, values we live by to this very day.
Incorporating Laytons, the collective Jeroboams history stretches all the way back to 1934, when Laytons was set up to supply good wine to the founder’s favourite restaurants and drinking holes. Starting modestly with a small outpost on Duke Street, Laytons expanded to become an import figure in the UK wine industry, amassing an impressive list of wineries for whom they acted as importer, counting Château Latour among them. The heart of this business continues on when Laytons became Jeroboams Trade who, likewise, supply some of our favourite drinking establishments throughout London and beyond.
Knowledge and service are at the core of what we do at Jeroboams. It is important for us to listen and work with you to help meet your needs. Our shop teams are able to assist with choosing a bottle to suit your tastes, and offer a range of services too, from home delivery to glass hire and tastings. Fine Wine is a big part of what we do, offering everything from cellar advice, storage and En Primeur, through to broking and even advice on selling your wines.
Central to our business is working directly with producers from all over the world. Led by Peter Mitchell MW, our buying covers famed producers such as Moss Wood, Hunter’s and Castello dei Rampolla, as well as vaunted Domaines from Burgundy, through to the lesser known wineries from the far reaches of Europe. Uniting these producers is a shared ethos between us: high quality wines made by people who care for people who care. Winning Decanter Magazine’s Italian Specialist of the Year award in 2019, 2020 and 2022 is testament to this, as is being named Decanter’s Outstanding Wine Retailer of the Year 2022.
As of Summer 2023, there are ten Jeroboams shops throughout some of London’s most affluent neighbourhoods, such as Elizabeth Street in Belgravia. Speak to any current and former Jeroboams shop staff and you will hear countless stories of famous people popping in for a bottle throughout the years: Mick Jagger, founding member of The Rolling Stones; Meghan Markle, former actress and Duchess of Sussex; Melanie Chisholm, aka Sporty Spice; celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, and former England footballer David Beckham to name only a few. These people among many local residents and members of the community who count on Jeroboams for a good bottle of something and good conversation whenever they pop by.
