Wines For Autumn

The first signs of autumn are here, and it’s time to start thinking beyond summer pours. But it’s not quite time for the full weight of winter reds. Autumn calls for something in between: vibrant reds with greater texture and depth, alongside whites with richness and weight, balanced by plenty of freshness.

Here’s our selection for the season in between.

2023 Perinato Soave Classico, Gianni Tessari

If you like your whites with a bit more weight, the 2023 Perinato from Gianni Tessari is well worth a look. Made from 100% Garganega, it’s a rich and textured Soave, with ripe yellow fruit, baked apple, floral notes and a touch of almond. There’s plenty of freshness and mineral character too, keeping the wine balanced rather than heavy.

It’s a great autumn white, particularly alongside food. Try it with roast or grilled fish, creamy risotto, seafood, or simply roast chicken and other lighter white meats.

2024 Red Hill Chardonnay, Port Phillip Estate

From Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, the 2024 Red Hill Chardonnay from Port Phillip Estate is a great choice if you like your whites with a little more depth. It’s full of lemon, lime and white peach, with hints of grapefruit, toasted nuts and a gentle touch of oak. There’s a lovely creamy texture through the middle, balanced by plenty of fresh acidity that keeps everything feeling bright and focused.

This is a Chardonnay that’s very much made for food. Try it alongside roast chicken, creamy pasta, pork or richer fish such as salmon.

2024 Felton Road Pinot Noir, Bannockburn

From Bannockburn in Central Otago, New Zealand, this 2024 Pinot Noir from Felton Road is a lovely example of a wine that feels right at home in autumn. It has plenty of dark cherry and berry fruit, alongside earthy, savoury notes and a hint of spice. The tannins are smooth and silky, giving the wine a little structure without making it feel heavy. There’s also a subtle touch of chocolate that adds to its warmth and depth.

It’s an easy wine to bring to the dinner table, particularly with roast duck, lamb, mushroom dishes or a simple roast chicken. The savoury character also makes it a great match for anything with herbs, earthy vegetables or a little spice.

2022 Chianti Classico, Castello dei Rampolla

If autumn calls for a proper red, this 2022 Chianti Classico from Castello dei Rampolla is a great place to start. Made mainly from Sangiovese, it’s full of ripe cherry and red berry flavours, with hints of spice and earthy, savoury notes. There’s a lovely freshness running through it too, with smooth tannins that give the wine structure without making it feel too heavy.

It’s the sort of bottle that really comes into its own around the dinner table. Pour it alongside a bowl of rich tomato pasta, a slow-cooked ragu, roast meats or grilled steak. It also works particularly well with mature cheeses, making it an easy choice for a relaxed autumn supper.

2019 Yount Mill Vineyard Grenache, Newfound

If you think Grenache is all about big, bold reds, this 2019 from Newfound might change your mind. From Yount Mill Vineyard in Napa Valley, it’s a more elegant and fresh take on the grape, with juicy strawberry and redcurrant flavours, hints of herbs and spice, and wonderfully fine tannins. There’s plenty of character here, but it stays bright and easy to drink rather than feeling heavy.

It’s a lovely match for autumn dishes that bring a bit of earthiness to the table. Try it with roast pork, duck, roast chicken or mushroom dishes, or alongside a simple plate of charcuterie.
