Samuel Billaud 2024 En Primeur

Samuel Billaud

Let’s cut to the chase. Samuel Billaud is one of the most exciting winemakers in Chablis... Would I put him in the same tier as Vincent Dauvissat and Raveneau? I would.” - Neal Martin, VinousMedia

"
Samuel Billaud continues to cement his reputation as one of the town's best half-dozen producers, crafting wines characterized by textural seamlessness and unerring precision.” - William Kelley

Samuel definitely features on my personal podium of the finest current producers of Chablis. His wines have a luxurious element to the fruit, but this harmonises with a scintillating sense of the great terroirs of Chablis.” - Jasper Morris MW

Classical Chablis was known for its restraint in youth, and these wines show that same, reassuringly taut profile. Samuel Billaud, now established amongst the region’s finest producers, has crafted a brilliant collection in 2024; wines that stand comfortably alongside the great names of Raveneau and Dauvissat, and that remind us what true Chablis can taste like.

2024 Petit Chablis, Samuel Billaud

89-92 Points “Outstanding Top Value”, Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

16.5 Points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com

88-90 Points, ★★★★ (4 stars), Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com

Samuel’s Petit Chablis is sourced from a single plot above Grand Cru Les Clos. Vibrant and saline, the 2024 Petit Chablis captures the brisk energy of the vintage. Aromas of lime zest, crushed shell and green pear lead into a zippy, mouth-watering palate. The texture is light but purposeful, the finish sharp and mineral. A benchmark example of how lively and transparent Petit Chablis can be when handled with care. Drink 2026-2032.

17 Points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com

90-92 Points, ★★★★★ (4 stars), Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com

Samuel’s Chablis “Grands Terroirs” is a blend of Les Pargues, Bas Chapelot and Fontenot. Classically poised and immediately expressive, the 2024 Chablis combines orchard fruit and citrus purity with a fine mineral drive. Notes of green apple, white peach and lemon pith glide over a core of chalk and sea breeze. There’s fine balance here between brightness and depth, finishing clean, long and distinctly Chablisien. Drink 2026-2033.

2024 Chablis, Premier Cru Fourneaux, Samuel Billaud

91-94 Points, “Sweet Spot Outstanding”, Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

17 Points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com

89-92 Points, ★★★★ (4 stars), Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com

Forneaux delivers its usual generosity, but the 2024 vintage gives it an extra cut of freshness. Aromas of ripe apple, fennel and white peach sit over a line of gunflint and chalk. The palate is supple and rounded at first, then tightened beautifully by a beam of acidity and mineral grip. Lively, harmonious and very true to its terroir. Drink 2027-2039.

2024 Chablis, Premier Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes, Samuel Billaud

The 2024 Vaillons Vieilles Vignes is open and inviting, showing ripe citrus, peach skin and a hint of honeysuckle. Yet beneath the charm lies striking mineral tension. The old vines bring texture and weight, balanced by the vintage’s cool precision. The finish is long and stony, leaving a mouth-watering salinity that keeps you coming back for another sip. Drink 2027-2042.

2024 Chablis, Premier Cru Montee de Tonnerre, Samuel Billaud

17.5+ Points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com

92-95 Points, ★★★★ (4 stars), Jasper Morris MW, InsideBurgundy.com

A standout in the range, Montée de Tonnerre marries intensity with refinement. Aromas of pear, citrus and delicate smoke give way to a finely etched palate of chalk and cool stone. There’s impressive depth and definition, with a long, vibrant finish that hums with mineral tension. Classic, precise and beautifully complete. Drink 2027-2046.

2024 Chablis, Grand Cru Bougros, Samuel Billaud

18 Points, Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com

The 2024 Bougros is taut and vibrant, showing all the power of the site but with the cool clarity of the vintage. Lemon oil, yellow apple and crushed oyster shell form the core, underpinned by a firm spine of acidity and salt-edged minerality. It’s a more vertical, focused Bougros this year, finishing long, pure and resonant. Drink 2029-2049.
