2023 Rosamundi Rosato, Maremma Toscana, Morisfarms

Italy Tuscany Maremma

Tasting note

Rosamundi is a structured rosé made from 100% Sangiovese. Vinified as a white wine without skin contact, this wine has a delightful rose and strawberry nose and a light earthy component. It pairs wonderfully with important dishes like grilled octopus, roast turkey and vitello tonnato.

Our thoughts

The Maremma is today one of Italy’s more glamorous wine regions, just down the coast from the SuperTuscans of Ornellaia, Sassicaia et al. Two hundred years ago, however, it was a mosquito-infested swampland – ripe for agriculture, but good for little else save the spread of malaria. The Moris family of Spain (despite the unlikely name) were one of the few to see the potential, and built up two sizeable farms, growing coriander, wheat and olives, and slowly developing a viticultural focus that has grown and grown over the last 40 years in line with the improved conditions and health of the area. Today they make a range of wines spanning native varieties such as Vermentino and Sangiovese along with the international Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. This 100% Sangiovese rosé is unusually pale by Italian standards and notably fresh, thanks to direct pressing and a short vinification and lees ageing in stainless steel.
