Maldonado
Maldonado is one of the newer wine producing regions in Uruguay, but is showing great promise. Located on the southeast of Uruguay, the maritime influence of the South Atlantic Ocean is surprisingly pronounced, with cool breezes moderating the brisk summer heat. There is a great geological diversity in this region too, where many areas of rocky strata provide fantastic drainage, alongside some areas with a greater concentration of clay. Perhaps unsurprisingly, white varieties are thriving in Maldonado, with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon and Rielsing doing well. Bodega Bouza make a brilliant Albariño from a vineyard located at the foot of the Pan de Azucar hill. Tannat and Pinot Noir are more fresh and mineral-driven than from other regions in Uruguay.
