Grosperrin Heritage N.71 Petite Champagne Cognac, Bottled Nov 2021 (70CL)
This cognac comes from an auction held in January 2019 for the benefit of Médecins du Monde and Action contre la Faim. These cognacs had been donated to these two organisations by André BERTANDEAU, winegrower in Salignac-Sur-Charente, who died in December 2016. Deported as a Compulsory Work Service to Germany in 1942, at the age of 20, to the camps of Buchenwald and Dora, he suffered the worst deprivations during his deportation, and underwent inhuman treatment initiated in the name of populist and racist ideals. Luckily, he managed to survive until the liberation of the camp in 1945. When he returned home to his family’s property, he regularly bore witness to what he had seen and experienced, hoping that history would “not stutter”. He donated the low profits from his small property to associations throughout his life and, on his death, he bequeathed all his assets, property, vineyards and stocks to these NGOs in order to help those who suffered from the wars and deportation. Very touched by the history, by the humanity and by the discretion of this man (who had not imagined that his donation could be considered important, and who had not
thought it useful to warn these associations), as well as by the quality of his eaux-devie, Grosperrin bought a large part of his stock.
It has an old gold hue, with an elegant and discreet aroma of fine candied fruit, dried mango, with a warm mineral aftertaste and with notes of dried flowers and roses. A fine, firm, and unmistakable aftertaste that is simultaneously powerful, fragile and concentrated. The first taste is assertive, chiselled, and precise, followed by warmer and more delicate notes combining delicacy and power. It is a mature cognac, calm but very present, not very demonstrative but very powerful. The aftertaste is protracted and fragrant, a great cognac, still in the making
