2022 Rosso di Montalcino, Agostina Pieri, Montalcino, Tuscany

Italy Tuscany Montalcino

Tasting note

Powerful and perfumed, with notes of red fruit jam, vilets and oak. Very full bodied and exhuberent, with masses of fruit, velvety tannins and a rich finish

Our thoughts

Rosso can sometimes be seen as the poor relation to Brunello – not just by drinkers, but by producers. Not so at the wonderfully old-school Agostina Pieri, where the bottling has in the past received the rare ‘Tre Bicchieri’ rating from Italian wine bible Gambero Rosso. Based in the lower, warmer, south-eastern corner of Montalcino, where the harvest is often two weeks ahead of most Montalcino producers, Francesco Monaci and his two sons have carved out an enviable reputation in their 30 years of production, all from a small, rudimentary winery with two sheds for barrel ageing, right next to their home.

Vinous

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is spicy and herbal in the glass. On the palate, it mixes sour cherry with blood orange and saline minerals, all framed by soft textures. It finishes with medium length and a salty tinge. This is an odd performance.
