2022 Clos Mireille Rose, Domaines Ott, Cotes de Provence
Tasting note
Lovely pale salmon coloured, the nose is at once complex and refreshing, with notes of nectarine, citrus and wild strawberry. Intense yet light on its feet, this is one of the finest roses available in the world today.
Our thoughts
Founded in the late 19th century, the three properties that make up Domaines Ott are still run by the Ott family, though the trio were purchased by Champagne house Louis Roederer back in 2004. The integral 50ha Clos Mireille is set right by the sea in the far south of Provence, and is unusual in harnessing clay rather than limestone soil. Viticulture is heavily influenced by the proximity to the sea, resulting in warmer nights and cooler days than most of Provence. Its acclaimed rosé – a blend of 60% Grenache, 22% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, 5% Cabernet, 3% Rolle – is widely accepted as the original ‘global’ Provence rosé – and in the eyes of many, still the benchmark, with its signature weight, ripe mandarin tones with a hint of lemon zest, and delicacy underpinned by power.

The 2022 Rosé Clos Mireille Cru Classé is dreamy, wafting up with a perfumed blend of nectarine, sweet white flowers and white strawberry. Like pure silk on the palate, this soothes with its ripe orchard fruits, which are gently contrasted by a bitter tinge of sour citrus as juicy acidity adds fleshy depths. The 2022 cleans up beautifully as inner florals and confectionary spice echo throughout. This is a gorgeous Rosé today, yet it should evolve beautifully for years. – Eric Guido
