2021 Moss Wood Pinot Noir, Margaret River, Western Australia
Tasting note
Ruby coloured with a nose showing a bright combination of strawberry, roses, quince jelly and musk. In the background there are soft oak notes and just a touch of earthiness and a hint of cumin. On the palate it shows bright strawberry and raspberry fruit, a generous warmth and fine acid and tannins.
Our thoughts
To say that this wine is something of a curiosity is an understatement – to the best of our knowledge, there are just two varietal Pinot Noirs made in the whole of Margaret River. Moss Wood founder Bill Pannel planted Pinot back in 1973, on the basis that he was a Burgundy fanatic, no-one knew any better back then and, hey, why not? The region has since become a haven for Cabernet, but its refreshing afternoon breezes mean, in the right hands, Pinot is still viable – if in a more generous, strawberry-compote rendering than the farmyardy Burgundian style.

Vinous
This gently fragrant 2021 Pinot Noir offers up fleshy aromas of raspberry compote, tobacco and spice, nicely framed by French oak. Dry and mid-weight layers of red licorice and raspberry flavors rise up on a supple palate with commendable length. The 2021 is approachable to enjoy now and over the next few years.
