2021 Chateau Grand Village, Bordeaux Superieur

Incorporating fully 25% Cabernet Franc derived from massal selections taken from Château Lafleur, the 2021 Grand Village offers up inviting aromas of dark berries, plums, violets and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's a lively, sapid wine that concludes with a saline finish. The progress of this estate, benefiting from upgraded vine genetics as well as the uprooting of less optimally sited parcels, transcends vintage variation to the extent that this 2021 should equal the quality Grand Village attained in 2016!

Inside Bordeaux
This has enticing aromatics of violet, peony, lilac. There is a focus on acidity and tannic structure that makes it more serious than your average AOC Bordeaux, and overall this is an elegant Grand Village, more subdued than in recent years, but with well-expressed brambled red fruits. They are increasingly focusing on limestone expression, as they uproot the heavier clay plots, and you feel it in the architecture and motion through the palate. Harvest from September 29 to October 7.

Inside Bordeaux
The attention to detail in the vineyard of Grand Village is just as you might expect from the Lafleur team, and makes a big difference in years like 2021 when the windows to react are so tiny. In bottle the aromatics centre on florality reflecting the cool vintage, with violet and peony flavours. Attractive balance and finesse, lighter shades of red and blue fruits with a juicy finish, this does a great job at walking the line, recommend looking out for this wine. Harvest from September 29 to October 7. A rare wine in 2021 at this level of price.

Vinous
The 2021 Grand Village is bright, saline and bursting with energy. There is a bit more Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) in the blend, and that very much comes through in the wine’s aromatic presence and shape. Rose petal, spice, mint, dried herbs and orange zest race out of the glass. There is a bit of nervousness in the tannin, but that just adds to the wine’s drive. The 2021 is a fabulous Grand Village.

Vinous
The 2021 Grand Village is a dark, brooding wine that very much captures the personality of the year in its somber bearing. Dark cherry fruit, rose petal, mint, herbs and blood orange lend notable aromatic presence. This is a rare Grand Village that needs time in bottle to be at its best, as the tannins are a bit imposing at this stage.

The 2021 Grand Village was picked from September 29 to October 7. The Guinaudeaus are now focused on the best 11 hectares out of the 20, frost making that focus easier. The bouquet is very open, offering red cherry and raspberry fruit, transparent and quite floral in style, revealing hints of rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied, very saline, quite granular in texture, and vibrant on the elegant, mineral-rich finish. Just a delicious Grand Village that needs a couple of years in bottle.

Vinous
The 2021 Grand Village has a lovely bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and a touch of black olive, well-defined with nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a pliant entry and a fine bead of acidity, not a powerful Grand Village but indeed bestowed the elegance that has only been evident in recent vintages—just a lovely wine.
