2021 Brane Cantenac Blanc (6 x Bottle)

France Bordeaux Margaux

Soft edges of rosebud, cut grass and white flowers, this is good quality with concentrated citrus, straw and white pepper spice. Has structure and impact, and unusually for white Médocs could do with a few years ageing. Brane Cantenac is an estate that is known for its precision work with oak barels during ageing (using both 225l and larger demi-muids), so no surprise perhaps that their white is a little marked by oak at this early stage, but it has huge potential and is easy to recommend. 3.2ha of white vines.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac shows considerable promise, exhibiting a deep bouquet of wild berries, cassis, spices and violets, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and impressively concentrated palate that’s framed by powdery tannins, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish. This seamless and enveloping wine is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and the balance Carmenère and Petit Verdot. Once again, it’s derived from the château’s best holdings on the plateau of Brane and is maturing in entirely new barrels.

Vinous

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac Blanc is a tasty, open-knit Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon blend. Lemon peel, graphite, slate, white pepper and bright mineral notes all grace this gracious, impeccable dry white. All this needs is a bit more mid-palate depth, but that should come as the vines age.

Vinous

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac Blanc, matured in 30% new oak, has a focused, lively bouquet of orange pith, lime and light elderflower scents. The palate has a pleasant fatness on the entry and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, with orange peel, lime and hints of lemongrass toward the finish. Quite delicious.

Vinous

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac Blanc represents the third release, a small production of around 3,600 bottles. It is fast becoming one of my favorite Left Bank whites. Orange blossom, Anjou pear and lemon verbena are all very well defined on the nose. The palate has an irresistible fatness, or rather weight—no skinny white here. Slightly resinous in texture, hints of tropical fruit, pineapple and guava emerge toward the finish. Delicious.
