2021 Blason de l’Evangile, Pomerol

France Bordeaux Pomerol

The 2021 Blason de L’Évangile is a very pretty wine. It is the first year the Blason was aged partly in concrete and steel, with a mix of 20% concrete, 15% foudre and the rest neutral barrique—an approach that seems very well suited to a wine that is all about elegance and class. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, spice, mint and orange peel linger on the delicate finish. The 2021 is lovely.

Inside Bordeaux

Bright, gentle extraction, purity to the raspberry fruits, touch of crab apple on the finish. 8% amphora, no new oak barrels but 15% new larger sized oak casks.

Inside Bordeaux

The austerity found En Primeur is still here but the aromatics do a great job of filling things out, and this has delicate raspberry leaf and red cherry fruits. No chaptilisation, and no fining before bottling. 5% new oak for ageing and large-sized oak casks, and the large sized foudes, plus 20% in stainelss steel. Both frost and mildew meant a 20hl/h yield. First organic-certified vintage, and first full year with Juliette Couderc as technical director.

Vinous

The 2021 Blason de L’Évangile is marked by bold, racy fruit and terrific energy. Crushed red berry fruit and lively floral notes abound in a classy, refined Blason. All the elements are impeccably balanced. Pretty floral accents grace the lifted, perfumed finish. The 2021 is a gorgeous Blason.

Vinous

The 2021 Blason de L’Évangile has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and briar scents, nicely focused, and not powerful but cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry. Not a complex Deuxième Vin, yet it does convey a sense of drinkability. A touch of spice enlivens the finish. Fine.

Vinous

The 2021 Blason de L’Évangile, which is partly aged in foudres and concrete to impart more freshness, has a strict bouquet with dark berry fruit, a touch of cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with black pepper and rosemary on the entry and moderate depth. It’s a little coarse and dry on the finish, therefore, I would drink this over the next four or five years.
