2019 Morellino di Scansano Riserva, Morisfarms

Italy Tuscany Maremma

Tasting note

Deep coloured with a nose of deep black fruits and spice. The palate is quite rich, yet also with freshness and has flavours of black cherry, spice and a hint of leather. Long and complex with fine tannins.

Our thoughts

It was in the 1980s that the Moris family expanded their focus from an already broad agricultural span that saw them growing coriander, wheat and olives, to developing a viticultural focus. Their first DOC wine, in 1981, was the then lowly Morellino di Scansano. The appellation is now a DOCG, and while wine remains secondary to other forms of agriculture in many parts of the region, it is slowly increasing in profile in line with this loftier status. The general style can be described as a ‘baby Brunello’, since the DOCG does not stipulate ageing, with the wine often released the year after the harvest, for early drinking. But Riserva wines such as this must spend at least two years maturing, with at least one year in oak, yielding a more structured wine with greater depth. That, together with the areas’ more southerly, lower altitude has produced a wine with relatively dark fruit and enveloping warmth.

Vinous

The 2019 Morellino di Scansano Riserva is laced with sweet pipe tobacco, cedar and worn-in leather. It comes across as rather forward, especially in its aromatic profile. There is good depth, but I would not push my luck on aging.
