2019 Melipal Malbec, Bodega Melipal, Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza
Tasting note
Bold nose full of black cherry, violet, vanilla and clove. The palate is full and rich, with layers of ripe fruit and enough tannin to give it shape.
Our thoughts
The Arisiti family behind Melipal were farmers for many generations before expanding to grape-growing and winemaking in 2002. Not long after that, they managed to acquire the renowned Nazarenas vineyard, home to some of Mendoza’s oldest Malbec vines, and a key source – along with other Melipal sites – of the fruit for this wine. Made in a modern style with plump, juicy, clean fruit aged in some new French oak, the grainy tannins lend structure. Today Melipal is owned by Mendoza superstar Achaval-Ferrer, bringing further expertise, though it continues to operate as a separate brand.

Vinous
The 2019 Malbec, from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, was aged for a year in 40% used oak. Garnet with a purple sheen. The nose offers red fruit with notes of mint and balsam. It’s plush with clay-based tannins and a ripe flavor. The 2019 is a little extractive on the tongue.
