2019 Finca Altamira, Achaval Ferrer
Tasting note
The 2019 Malbec Finca Altamira hails from Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley, and was aged for 13 months in 80% new French oak barrels. A rich, reddish-purple in the glass. The complex aromas feature plum with hints of country herbs, camphor and thyme accompanied by whiffs of violet and mint. The ageing process adds notes of tobacco and cedar. In the mouth, it delivers a nuanced, high-pitched flavour supported by a juicy, relaxed and polished tannic structure. A characterful, energetic wine that ends with a precise, lingering fruity flourish.
Our thoughts
In its relatively short history, Achaval Ferrer has become a bona fide star of the Argentinian wine firmament, with its three (soon to become four) single-vineyard ‘Finca’ cuvées attracting something of a cult following. The wines come from ungrafted, seemingly disease-resistant, century-old vines cropped at lower yields for extra concentration and more complex flavours. Finca Altamira is arguably the star of the firmament, its debut 1999 release having become the first Argentinian wine to be awarded five stars by Decanter magazine. Two decades later, this is an even more refined creation, fine tannins and an intense but not heavy core giving off a certain Bordelais sensitivity. Give it 10 years in the cellar and it will offer even more.
