2018 Alte Reben Shiraz, Kaesler, Barossa Valley, South Australia (6 x Bottle)
Tasting note
German for 'Old Vines' - this sophisticated Shiraz comes from vines over 125 years old. Benefitting from six years of bottle age, the nose has lifted black fruit with liquorice, black pepper and charcuterie. Dark chocolate and mulberry fruit flavours are complemented by a ferrous character thanks to the composition of the vineyard's ancient soils.
Our thoughts
The Kaesler family first planted in Barossa in the 1890s, and its Marananga estate dates back to 1899. The gnarly old vines are still going strong, and what they lack in quantity (necessarily careful picking sometimes yields as little as a bunch per vine) they more than make up for in quality – this is a powerful wine with great structure that speaks of its provenance.
