2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, Origine, Cantina Nottola

Italy Tuscany Montepulciano

Tasting note

The nose shows dark fruits and notes of leather and tobacco. Sweet fruited, with ripe cherry fruit and a smoky earthy backdrop. Fine tannins and a long finish.

Our thoughts

Anterivo Giomarelli poured much of his fortune from a successful career in construction into reviving Cantina Nottola via a new winery, doubling the vineyard area and engaging the services of famed consultant Riccardo Cotarella. But the winemaking – now overseen by his son Giuliano – remains traditional. Here, the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks and, for this Riserva bottling, finished in French barriques, yielding full, savoury fruit amid brooding leather and tobacco tones. Another year or two in bottle and this will be perfect.
