2017 Mendel Unus, Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza (6 x Bottle)

Argentina Mendoza

Deep red with violet tints. The nose is dominated by fresh black cherry, plum and blackberry, with notes of cassis, chocolate and caramel. The palate is fleshy and meaty with fine harmonious tannins. Structured, but not stern, this is highly complex, with beautiful lifting acidity that makes it rich yet easily drunk.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

There is more ripeness in the 2017 Unus than in the 2016 I tasted next to it. This feels younger and very fruit driven, juicier and with a softer texture, with volume and lush tannins. There is a balsamic hint here, powerful aromatics and a forward personality in this vintage, while keeping the composure and classical Mendel style, just a little more concentrated and ripe, but without excess. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2019.

Vinous

A blend of Malbec with 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot from Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, this wine spent 16 months in French barrels. Deep purple in color. On the nose, ripe blackberry and plum notes make way for herbs. Oaky flavors come next, along with a volatile flourish that enhances the tone. Good body, moderate freshness and a juicy, compressed feel. Well balanced, leading to a long, fruity finish with a dusty texture. A Bordeaux blend in its Sunday best.
