2017 Chateau Pavie Macquin, Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion (1 x Magnum)

France Bordeaux St. Emilion

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Pavie Macquin comes charging out of the glass with exuberant scents of warm black cherries, blackberry pie and wild blueberry coulis plus hints of menthol, licorice, candied violets and charcuterie. Medium-bodied, the palate is an exercise in precision and poise, featuring a beautiful frame of wonderfully ripe, very fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long and multilayered. Simply stunning! The blend here is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.

Inside Bordeaux

Juicy blackberry and damson fruits, this could almost be ready to drink now as it is already showing delicate, finely-sculpted tannins, touches of lace and linen alongside the slate texture. Having said that, this is likely to age like the 2001, meaning it might be worth getting on board now but then putting it away for another few decades. Without doubt one of the wines of the vintage (when I tasted it in bottle I wrote that it ‘climbs right out of the 2017 pigonhole’ and I definitely stand by that comment). Expect subtle pleasures, not exuberance, with gentle smoked saffron and liqourice root lingering on the palate. Part of the classic vintages series within this vertical.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2017 Pavie Macquin is deep garnet-purple in color and opens with flamboyant notes of warm black and red plums, black cherries and tilled soil with delicate touches of cloves, star anise, red roses and forest floor. Medium-bodied with a firm backbone of very finely grained, very ripe tannins and tons of freshness, it has wonderfully elegant yet intense fruit layers and a long, minerally finish. Just beautiful.

Vinous

A sexy, racy wine, the 2017 Pavie Macquin is full of personality. A rush of sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and blood orange infuses this sumptuous, racy Saint-Émilion. A wine of striking purity and total class, Pavie Macquin dazzles. As always, Pavie Macquin is marked by stunning fruit purity, red fruit, soft contours and silky, voluptuous tannins. In 2017, the blend has a bit more Cabernet Franc than in the past, now that younger vineyards have come online.

Vinous

The 2017 Pavie Macquin is a rich, deep and super-expressive wine with remarkable persistence. As always, Pavie Macquin is a potent Saint-Émilion, but the 2017 has terrific energy as well. In 2017, Pavie-Macquin is not as forthcoming in its youth as it can be, and is going to need a few years in bottle to truly come together. A bit of time in the glass brings out very pretty floral top notes and rich, sensual fruit that is such a signature of this site. Tasted three times.

Vinous

The 2017 Pavie-Macquin possesses tremendous fruit density, but it also comes across as raw and not fully formed. Then again, the 2017 is in cement undergoing fining, which is always the most difficult stage in which to taste a young wine.

Vinous

The 2017 Pavie-Macquin was impressive from barrel and now in bottle, it continues to show potential. The bouquet is very pure with small dark cherries, cassis, violet and peony aromas. The new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that belie the backbone of this Saint-Émilion. There is a citric element that suffuses the intense black fruit laced with graphite and tar, the limestone soils offering freshness on the finish. Excellent.
