2016 Psi, Dominio de Pingus, Ribera del Duero (3 x Magnum)

Spain Ribera del Duero

The entry-level 2016 PSI was also tasted before it was bottled the last time I covered the Duero zone, so I had it again, this time in bottle and next to the also-bottled 2017 and a sample of the 2018. This really reminded me of the style of the old-time Ribera del Duero, classical, with some aromas of orange peel, wild herbs and berries. They used grapes from 22 villages from Ribera to showcase the style of this zone—wines with character, nicely integrated oak (they use old vines with some 10% to 12% Garnacha, and the wine matures in oak vats rather than barrique) and a gentle texture with the tannic structure of the zone. This is delicious and really represents the naked character of the place without oak. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2018.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

I tasted the 2015 in bottle and the 2016 PSI a few weeks before bottling, so I tasted the final blend in tank and ready to go into bottle. What came to mind when I smelled this sample was some of the old vintages of Pesquera. All the grapes come from the north and east of Aranda del Duero, from the cooler part of the appellation. The logistics of doing this volume is not easy, and in 2016 they were able to ferment 100% of the volume in their own winery, which gave them more control. The year was naturally fresher, mostly through higher yields, and they also managed the harvest date with more precision. All this translates into a fresher wine with more precision and elegance. They expect to reach 300,000 bottles of this 2016, which is also probably the finest vintage of PSI—finer, longer and sharply focused. According to Sisseck, this is the PSI he always dreamed about. It will be bottled in the summer of 2018.

92-93 Points / Drinking 2018 - 2024

Vinous

Deep, brilliant violet. Expressive, mineral- and spice-tinged cherry and blackberry aromas, along with suggestions of succulent flowers, pipe tobacco and cola. Sweet, seamless and energetic in the mouth, offering intense red and dark fruit preserve, mocha and floral pastille flavors that deepen slowly through the midpalate. In a rich yet lively style, showing impressive clarity on a long, penetrating finish shaped by fine-grained, even tannins.
