2016 Meursault, 1er Cru Genevrieres, Domaine Michel Bouzereau (6 x Bottle)

France Burgundy Cote de Beaune

The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières has a potent, personality-driven bouquet with conspicuous eucalyptus scents that give it an almost medicinal character, fortunately not so strong as to obscure the terroir. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture, a fine bead of acidity, modest weight in the mouth with veins of walnut and ginger toward the lively finish. This is one of the best wines from Michel Bouzereau in 2016, and it should give immense pleasure over the next decade.

Vinous

Bright pale yellow. Complex, lively nose melds orange zest, lemon, pink grapefruit, pineapple and lichee. Suppler on entry than the Charmes yet less expressive, even a bit disassociated, in the mid-palate in the early going (Bouzereau notes that his Genevrières always needs longer to harmonize). This wine was actually higher in acidity than the Charmes at the harvest but also higher in pH. A bit dusty on the finish. An awkward showing today.

Vinous

(from vines averaging about 30 years of age): Pale, bright yellow. Ripe, fresh apricot and peach on the nose; not a particularly limey style but revealed a more tangy aspect with air. A bit less sweet in the early going than the Charmes Dessus but less salty as well, with nicely integrated acidity giving the wine good inner-mouth tension. Flavors of stone fruits, spices and flowers carry well on the tactile, mouthcoating finish. But this wine is less demonstrative today than the Charmes and will need a bit more patience.
