Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2016 Massal 1945 Cabernet Sauvignon from ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon plants from an old massal selection on volcanic and granite soils was harvested early and produced in the most natural way possible, only adding a little bit of sulfur before bottling. 2016 was the rainiest year on record since 1950, but they finished picking on April 14th, just before the rains started. It fermented in a 10,000-liter stainless steel vat with indigenous yeasts and matured in well-seasoned barriques and one 7,000-liter foudre for 12 months. It’s balsamic and expressive with spicy notes reminiscent of cola nuts and more red than black fruit. The palate is soft and the tannins very fine. It has balance and elegance. 15,000 bottles. It was bottled in June 2017.
