Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The dark and creamy 2016 Las Jaras had a spicy and smoky character. It comes from a blend of Prieto Picudo, Mencía and Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera) from different vineyards in the Jamuz Valley on red clay soils. They used 75% full clusters for the fermentation in oak vats, and the wine matured in those vats and large barrels for nine months. It has plenty of tannins that are going to require powerful food. It’s concentrated, powerful but approachable, in a sort of commercial profile. 5,200 bottles produced.

Vinous

Lurid violet color. Smoke-accented blackberry and blueberry qualities on the perfumed nose, with violet, peppery spice and game notes emerging slowly. Offers spice-laced dark berry preserve flavors that pick up candied licorice and cola qualities with aeration, along with a hint of bitter chocolate. Puts on weight with air and finishes with smoky mineral cut, very good tenacity and building tannins. (Made with 75% whole clusters, with fermentation and eight months of aging in large French oak tanks.)
