2016 Alte Reben Shiraz, Kaesler, Barossa Valley, South Australia

Australia South Australia Barossa Valley

Tasting note

German for 'Old Vines' - this sophisticated Shiraz comes from vines over 125 years old. Benefitting from six years of bottle age, the nose has almost savoury black fruits. Rich and opulent but still boasting youthful freshness, this is a powerful wine with great structure that speaks of its provenance.

Our thoughts

The Kaesler family first planted in Barossa in the 1890s, and its Marananga estate dates back to 1899. The gnarly old vines are still going strong, and what they lack in quantity (necessarily careful picking sometimes yields as little as a bunch per vine) they more than make up for in quality – here via a palate that packs power and purity.
