2012 Cote Rotie, Belle Helene, Domaine Michel Ogier (3 x Bottle)

France Rhone North Rhone

A wine that could flirt with perfection at maturity, the 2012 Côte Rôtie Cuvée Belle Helene is the polar opposite of the perfumed, finesse styled Lancement and offers a dense, powerful, masculine personality. Inky-colored, full-bodied, sensationally concentrated and still balanced and seamless, it offers a serious bouquet of dark fruits (cassis, black raspberries), crushed rock, charcoal, graphite and wood smoke. The more rounded style of the 2012 vintage gives this a touch of upfront charm, but it really needs 6-7 years of cellaring and will have three decades or more of longevity.

Vinous

(made with 50% whole clusters): Bright violet color. Exotic floral, spicy red berries on the intensely perfumed nose. Juicy, penetrating and pure, demonstrating superb thrust to its sweet black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors. A bright mineral quality adds lift and cut to the floral finish, which lingers with outstanding tenacity. Quite graceful for this bottling, which is normally more brawny and dark fruit in character.

Vinous

Inky purple. Exotically perfumed scents of blackberry liqueur, Asian spices and potpourri, with a mineral quality adding vibrancy. Spicy and focused on the palate, showing excellent depth and thrust to its sappy dark berry, spicecake and candied violet flavors. Mineral-driven and seamless in texture, finishing with supple tannins and lingering spiciness. Pretty seductive right now for this bottling, which is often more standoffish at this stage. Note that this wine was still in barrel when I tasted it in mid-December.

Vinous

Saturated ruby. Heady aromas of candied dark berries, incense and licorice are complemented by suggestions of candied violet and five-spice powder. Supple, deeply flavored and energetic, offering powerful blackberry and floral pastille flavors and a zesty peppery nuance. The smooth, strikingly long finish features lingering sweetness, a hint of allspice and subtle, slow-building tannins.
