2009 Chateau Gloria, Cru Bourgeois St. Julien (12 x Bottle)

France Bordeaux St. Julien

I chose this vintage of Gloria for my Bordeaux Advent Calendar with 67 Pall Mall. It's actually a wine that I have chosen two years in a row for the advent calendar, because it is such a sure fire hit, with the most festive of all labels (think angels and heavenly hosts). Taste-wise, this is Gloria at its best - plump and spiced black fruits, majoring on black cherry and damson, touch of smoke, pared-back generosity that speaks of St Julien, but with the kick of glamour and silky tannins that makes this such an appealing and distinct character in the appellation. 40% new oak.

Inside Bordeaux

Love this 2009, it is so much Gloria at its best – plump black fruits, black cherry, damson, generous without overplaying its hand, offering signature St Julien mixed with a subtle glamour. The fruits are given depth and compleixty by black pepper spice, silky tannins, crushed rocks, aniseed. Beautiful and full of character. 40% new oak. Harvest September 24 to October 8. Remi di Constanzo technical director.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Medium garnet colored, the 2009 Gloria rolls out of the glass with alluring scents of potpourri, Black Forest cake, Morello cherries and raspberry compote with touches of rose hip tea, cinnamon stick and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it packs the palate with generous red berry preserves and exotic spices layers, framed by velvety tannins, finishing long and perfumed.

Vinous

The 2009 Gloria has a well defined, classic Saint-Julien bouquet with blackberry, forest floor, cedar and hints of mint coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. Not unlike Branaire-Ducru in style but with just a little more heft towards the grippy finish. This is a Gloria that I would broach over the next decade. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits’ Ten Year On tasting.
