1980 Grosperrin Fins Bois Cognac, Bottled June 2022 (70CL)
This 1980 vintage cognac comes from a small estate founded in 1930 by the father of the widow of the winegrower (died in 2009) from whom Grosperrin purchased this lot. This grower, located in the commune of Sainte Sévère, is situated on the border of Fins Bois and Borderies, on a clay-siliceous terroir, with flint. As generational farmers, this family has always managed to combine breeding, agriculture and viticulture. Not having a still, every year this winegrower sent his wines to a professional distiller for distillation, located a few kilometers from his farm. Due to lack of resources and space, the eaux-de-vie were aged at ORECO, in very dry cellars for more than 40 years. The year 1980 is engraved in the memories of cognac for its very small harvest, and the great cold which accompanied the harvest (the “harvest in mittens”, up to -10° C!).
Old gold colour, amber highlights. On the nose, a “whole” cognac, very representative from the Fins Bois vintage, with however an unusual tension, spicy and floral, which clearly demonstrates the ambiguity of the Sainte Sévère terroir. Notes “noble”, sweet spices, weathered mahogany wood, warm flint. In mouth, the attack is lively, very readable, mineral, fruity. A dry cognac, with a long and peppery finish. A cognac that is starting to “turn”, according to the jargon of cellar masters (thus defining this particular period of aging, when the rancios become more refined, more deeper, more “racy”).
