Vietti’s 2019s are off the charts. I can’t say I am totally surprised, as I have been following the wines for several years. From the first wine to the last, the 2019s possess tremendous depth and purity, along with the deep inflections of site that are what Barolo is all about. Readers who can find these wines should not hesitate, as they are truly magnificent.”

Vietti needs little introducing; a “First Growth” of Italy, and one of the most iconic producers of Barolo and Barbaresco, under the careful stewardship of Luca Currado and Elena Penna the winery has soared to brand new heights, receiving international recognition and widespread acclaim for the thrilling set of wines they produce year in year out.

In 2019 they have clearly made some of the wines of the vintage. With the sad news of Luca and Elena’s departure earlier this year, 2019 marks one of the last vintages that they have made together. A fitting tribute to their 30-year tenure at the estate, their Barolo Castiglione 2019 has already received its highest ever score from Antonio Galloni, placing it alongside the 2016 and 2010 vintages in terms of greatness. We couldn’t agree more, this is a mighty fine Barolo Castiglione that will do well with time in the cellar.

2019 Barolo, Castiglione, Vietti

The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut. 94 points.
