40 Years of Cloudy Bay
The story of Cloudy Bay is one of adventure, vision and commitment. In 1983 David Hohnen tasted his first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Captivated by its intensity and purity, he began a journey to bottle the essence of Marlborough and share it with the world.
A driven, practical man, David knew that his wine needed one key factor to stand up on the world stage: quality. Working with winemaker Kevin Judd, he founded Cloudy Bay with a promise of uncompromising quality from grape to glass. It’s been that way ever since.
The Cloudy Bay legacy began with Sauvignon Blanc, a flagship New Zealand wine since its first vintage. It is the wine credited with putting New Zealand on the world wine map. With superb Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also coming from its home vineyards, Cloudy Bay is proof of Marlborough’s pedigree as a wine region.
Never content to rest on its laurels, Cloudy Bay has endeavoured to explore new frontiers. Te Koko, a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, launched in 2000 and changed how the world saw the region’s signature grape variety. In the following years, Cloudy Bay also ventured into a Te Koko Pinot Noir, from Central Otago for a darker, more brooding style.
At Cloudy Bay, the goal is to connect people to the land through each glass of wine, no matter where they are in the world, and let New Zealand’s natural wonder speak through every sip. Each wine evokes New Zealand’s signature simple luxury, like enjoying fresh-caught seafood at sunset in a breathtaking bay.
